The need for anger management affects so many people in our society and it is crucial to study and create anger management techniques, teach these skills, and provide counseling and appropriate care and support. Anger issues affect individuals from childhood to adulthood and it is necessary to learn anger management skills that work for any age group.
What worked when you were a child or teenager may not serve you well as an adult. If you are daily dealing with anger problems, it’s important to learn effective coping skills to keep that anger under control. Here are some ways that I can help you:
Getting A Grip On Your Anger Management With EMDR II Trauma Therapy
EMDR II (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a therapy that is helpful to people who are dealing with negative emotions related to anger, stress, anxiety, phobias, addictions, and trauma. Many times when I’m working with clients who are ‘stuck’ in anger, the anger has roots in childhood trauma. This trauma can be emotional, physical, spiritual or sexual in nature. The trauma gets stored in the neural pathways of the brain and an ‘imprinting’ occurs. The technique used as an anger management therapy is achieved by using eye movements to address negative beliefs, traumatic memories, physical sensations, and emotions held in the soul (mind & emotions) body, and spirit. As I use this therapeutic skill, clients find relief from their anger at all these levels of experience and a natural form of resolution takes place allowing them to move forward in life and in their relationships with much greater ease.
I also integrate the spiritual component of healing into this therapy in ways that are meaningful and helpful to your spiritual beliefs. As the negative beliefs of the mind are transformed into positive beliefs, the body gives up old patterns of holding and relaxes; the emotions become calm and healing occurs with each session. EMDR II energetically penetrates the body when tense and upset, and causes an individual’s energy to shift around their body, resulting in relaxation. EMDR II works to balance the brain hemispheres to help you resolve your problems and find forgiveness.
Developing positive anger management skills may involve keeping a journal of negative emotions. When you write about the events or situations upsetting you, it is helpful to get the negative thoughts, emotions, and beliefs out of your head and onto paper. Using this technique can help you work through anger without lashing out at others with it and prevent causing greater harm. This particular anger management activity provides specific details and triggers which usually brings up anger. Being able to read and review your reactions to various situations will make you more aware and capable of initiating permanent, positive changes in your behavior.
Anger – Management Skills
In the books of Psalm and Proverbs, King David left us with much wisdom about our anger and how to use it and not use it. “Don’t sin by letting anger control you. Think about it overnight and remain silent.” Psalm 4:4. “Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insit on quarreling.” Proverbs 20:3. In certain situations removing yourself from an escalating or threatening situation may eliminate the problem with a cool-down time. If you realize you have difficulty controlling your temper in certain trigger situations, you might consider staying away from these situations entirely, which are likely to cause heated arguments.
“Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper – it only leads to harm.” Psalm 37:8-9. If you have a regular pattern of lashing out during specific conversations, it’s best to learn new ways of communicating in them that are healthier for all concerned. . Improved communication skills can be learned in the process of therapy. Some people who have unresolved or intense anger issues seem to look for a reason to get upset. This is the ‘stuck’ pattern of anger I referred to earlier. EMDR II therapy and improved communication skills can tremendously help change this pattern and offer greater flexibility in perceptions and responses and therefore improved relationships and an improved life.
“An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.” Proverbs 29:22. Learning and implementing anger management skills that work for you is definitely one essential step when trying to cope with feelings of anger that become rage. Putting a few anger management skills to use may mean trying each of them at least a few times and sticking with the ones that show results. When you are attempting to gain control over your emotions and eliminate the negative feelings that have dominated your life, exploring anger management with EMDR II Trauma Therapy and improved communication skills is necessary to find the techniques and skills which work best for you.
Lastly, the apostle Paul admonishes us against letting our anger become sinful against others and the remedy for it when he says, “When you follow the deires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleaures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things.” Galations 5:19-23. Inviting the Holy Spirit to give us assistance with our anger leads to the fruits of the Spirit that are pleasing to God.
