Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping, is a relatively new practice that synthesizes western therapeutic models with traditional Chinese medicine. The goal of EFT is to help individuals gain control over their emotions, which will help them maximize their health and well-being. Who doesn’t want to feel happy? EFT is a fast way to relieve emotional distress and reduces trauma and pain. This technique has positive benefits for treating and reducing the effects of painful memories, anxiety, guilt, anger frustration, PTSD, phobias, addiction, low self-esteem, physical pain and behavioral issues.
Basic EFT utilizes the upper-body Chinese meridians. These meridian points are located in the hands, the top of the head, above the eyes, the side of the eyes, under the nose, on the cleft of the chin, under the arms, and in the fingertips themselves. The participant taps these areas with the fingertips while focusing on an issue that causes them pain, shame, anxiety, or any other negative emotion. The participant will simultaneously say a positive affirmation while tapping the meridian. Next, the participant will move to other meridians around the upper body in order to clear the energy pathways.
Before beginning the tapping process described above, the participant will identify negative feelings or emotions. They will then give their negative emotions a number corresponding to the level of distress felt: ten being a state of complete distress, and one being wholly relaxed. This number system is known as the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS).
If you have never experienced acupuncture, Shiatsu massage, or some other form of acupressure, the concept of meridians might sound strange to you. EFT is modeled after acupuncture by applying percussive pressure to the meridian points instead of needles. One of the main ideas EFT derives from acupuncture is freeing the energy that gets trapped in the body, which leads to greater well-being. Usually, the energy will be trapped in one or two places. For example, your throat might feel tight, or your abdomen might feel like it is in knots. During EFT, while focusing on the body part that is identified, the participant will begin to tap and say, “Even though I have this feeling of anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself.” The participant will move on to tap the next meridian point and name the emotion that is causing them distress: “Even though I am very sad, angry and anxious, I love and accept these feelings, and I deeply love and accept myself.”
A basic understanding of EFT can yield positive benefits to practically anyone. Participants generally report improved feelings and a lower SUDS number after an EFT session. Sometimes, a person will report only a slight reduction in the SUDS number they reported at the beginning of the session. As various aspects or layers arise that are related to the disturbing emotions or physical pain, more EFT can be applied to bring relief. It might help to be more specific with the event or emotion that is causing distress. An EFT practitioner can assist you in identifying negative emotions, locate meridians and demonstrate the technique. You are the only one who can take control of your emotions and journey toward a new place of empowerment. An EFT practitioner can facilitate the process and help make it much easier for you to gain your self-empowerment.
